Paving the Pathways to Employability for Youth at Risk in Mexico

In Mexico, youths who dropped out of their formal school due to their life situation obtained a second-chance thanks to an impactful project by the Innovation Foundation, one of SkillLab’s primary partners. The global foundation of the Adecco Group set up a social innovation lab that aims to help young people from underserved communities, particularly those who struggle to stay in education and employment. One of the challenges they tackle is to help young people to recognize and value the skills they have - a crucial element to break out of unemployment. Under the Youth@Risk project, the Innovation Foundation partnered with YouthBuild México to provide a second-chance education and boost the youths employability in the labor market. SkillLab has joined this project as its official technology partner, by providing our skills-based solution to help the young people discover their skills, potential careers, and learn to communicate their skills professionally.
Young people participating in the project were accompanied by tutors and counselors in completing their education while gaining job-readiness skills with support from our skills-based tool. Their diverse backgrounds bring various opportunities and challenges in completing the education journey. However, as shown by their stories below, they also actively leveraged our skills-based technology to make their skills more visible, attain confidence, and access more opportunities.
From Uncertainty to Clarity

Being introduced to SkillLab for the first time, Ángel initially found the skills-based tool a bit overwhelming. But after his tutor explained that it was all about highlighting his strengths, the experience became more intuitive.
Ángel has been struggling with creating a CV from a blank page. He found it challenging to think about all his skills, deciding what to put in the CV, and expressing those skills in words. The opportunity to generate a skills-based CV with SkillLab’s solution was a valuable and practical experience for him. “It gives you the tools and options to create a CV in a much easier way. Without SkillLab, you'd have to do everything yourself—and that's not always easy,” he said.
Thanks to the skills-based tool, the process of documenting and communicating his skills becomes more manageable. This experience made him realize how useful the tool is particularly for young people. “I would recommend SkillLab especially for young people, because it’s much easier and more practical to use.”
Gaining Confidence through Self-Awareness

For Adelaida, SkillLab’s skills-based tool was not just for her professional development, but also personal growth. Her main struggles when it comes to job search is twofold: understanding what she can and cannot do and describing her skills professionally. The opportunity to use our skills-based tool changed this. “SkillLab helped me recognize both my strengths and my weaknesses—because sometimes it’s hard to accept that there are things we don’t know,” she said.
Adelaida is aware that she has skills for written and verbal communication. Yet, she was not sure how to accurately describe them in a professional CV and communicate them in an interview. The skills-based tool provided her with good phrasing. “For example, … 'I'm good at writing texts' or 'I'm good at public speaking,” she recalled her experience.
After using SkillLab’s skills-based solution, Adelaida feels more confident in her skills and to enter the labor market. “It had a positive impact on me and, honestly… It helped me lose my fear."
Structuring Skills with Simplicity in a Professional Way
It’s really helpful for young people to (help them) understand the different options we have to start working.
Meanwhile, Erick thought that the skills-based tool is very user-friendly. Once he received access from the tutors to create his skills profile in the tool, he was able to quickly use every feature. “The tool guides you toward identifying your skills. It is excellent, very intuitive, and I think that really improves the experience of figuring out what to include and what you're good at.”
Furthermore, Erick was also able to use the tool to help him organize his thoughts. By understanding what he is good at and expressing it professionally, he can confidently showcase his skills, for instance during a job interview.
Similar to Ángel, Erick also thought that young people looking to enter the labor market can benefit greatly from SkillLab’s skills-based tool. “It’s really helpful for young people to (help them) understand the different options we have to start working.”
These young people’s positive experiences with skills-based approaches in preparing themselves to enter the workforce confirms what their tutors observe throughout the project.

Abriendo el camino hacia la empleabilidad para jóvenes en riesgo en México
En México, los jóvenes que abandonaron la escuela formal debido a su situación obtuvieron una segunda oportunidad gracias a un impactante proyecto la Innovation Foundation, uno de los principales socios de SkillLab. La fundación global del Grupo Adecco creó un laboratorio de innovación social cuyo objetivo es ayudar a los jóvenes de comunidades desfavorecidas, en particular a aquellos que tienen dificultades para permanecer en el sistema educativo y en el mercado laboral. Uno de los retos a los que se enfrentan es ayudar a los jóvenes a reconocer y valorar las habilidades que poseen, un elemento crucial para salir del desempleo. En el marco del proyecto Youth@Risk, la Innovation Foundation se asoció con YouthBuild México para proporcionar una segunda oportunidad educativa e impulsar la empleabilidad de los jóvenes en el mercado laboral. SkillLab se ha unido a este proyecto como socio tecnológico oficial, proporcionando nuestra solución basada en habilidades para ayudar a los jóvenes a descubrir sus habilidades, posibles carreras y aprender a comunicar sus habilidades de manera profesional.
Los jóvenes que participan en el proyecto cuentan con el acompañamiento de tutores y orientadores para completar su educación, al tiempo que adquieren habilidades para prepararse para el trabajo con el apoyo de nuestra herramienta basada en habilidades. Sus diversos orígenes les brindan diversas oportunidades y desafíos para completar su trayectoria educativa. Sin embargo, como lo demuestran sus historias a continuación, también aprovecharon activamente nuestra tecnología basada en habilidades para hacer más visibles sus habilidades, ganar confianza y acceder a más oportunidades.

Ángel ha tenido dificultades para crear un CV partiendo de cero. Le resultaba complicado pensar en todas sus habilidades, decidir qué incluir en el CV y expresar esas habilidades con palabras. Para Adelaida, la herramienta basada en habilidades de SkillLab no solo sirvió para su desarrollo profesional, sino también para su crecimiento personal. Sus principales dificultades a la hora de buscar trabajo son dos: comprender lo que puede y no puede hacer, y describir sus habilidades de manera profesional. La oportunidad de utilizar nuestra herramienta basada en habilidades cambió esto. «SkillLab me ayudó a reconocer tanto mis fortalezas como mis debilidades, porque a veces es difícil aceptar que hay cosas que no sabemos», afirma.
Adelaida es consciente de que tiene habilidades para la comunicación escrita y verbal. Sin embargo, no estaba segura de cómo describirlas con precisión en un CV profesional y comunicarlas en una entrevista. La herramienta basada en habilidades le proporcionó una buena redacción. «Por ejemplo, «Soy buena escribiendo textos» o «Soy buena hablando en público», recuerda su experiencia.
Después de utilizar la solución basada en habilidades de SkillLab, Adelaida se siente más segura de sus habilidades y de entrar en el mercado laboral. «Tuvo un impacto positivo en mí y, sinceramente... me ayudó a perder el miedo».
Estructurar habilidades con simplicidad de manera profesional
Por su parte, Erick consideró que la herramienta basada en habilidades es muy fácil de usar. Una vez que los tutores le dieron acceso para crear su perfil de habilidades en la herramienta, pudo utilizar rápidamente todas las funciones. «La herramienta te guía para identificar tus habilidades. Es excelente, muy intuitiva, y creo que realmente mejora la experiencia de averiguar qué incluir y en qué eres bueno».

Además, Erick también pudo utilizar la herramienta para ayudarle a organizar sus ideas. Al comprender en qué es bueno y expresarlo de manera profesional, puede mostrar con confianza sus habilidades, por ejemplo, durante una entrevista de trabajo.
Al igual que Ángel, Erick también pensó que los jóvenes que buscan escribir en el mercado laboral pueden beneficiarse enormemente de la herramienta basada en habilidades de SkillLab. «Es muy útil para los jóvenes (les ayuda) a comprender las diferentes opciones que tenemos para empezar a trabajar».
Las experiencias positivas de estos jóvenes con los enfoques basados en habilidades para prepararse para entrar en el mercado laboral confirman lo que sus tutores observan a lo largo del proyecto.
